In a get together hosted by the Arts Council, Niamh Sharkey was named only the second ever children's laureate in Ireland and was exhibited a medal to mark the honour by President Michael D Higgins. Laureate na n is an initiative of the Arts Council with the support of the Office of the Minister to be and Youth Affairs, Baby's Books Ireland, Poetry Ireland and the Arts Council of upper Ireland. The honour was established to engage young people with high quality children's literature and to underline value of children's literature in our cultural and imaginative life.
